Praying Mantis LP

Hello again World. Just wanted to let you know that we are still alive and currently working on a new set of recordings tentatively titled Praying Mantis

These recordings focus on a cast of characters who live in a meadow across the road from the house where I grew up. They include, but are not limited to: a girl named Sally, a bluebird named Hank, a daisy called Daisy, an Earthworm Wally, a Christopher Cricket, and a praying mantis named Pellapetisimo. Hopefully we'll be finished and have the songs available by year's end.

Additionally, we are playing our first proper show in about 9-months, at Cafe Coco in Nashville, Saturday, September the 7th.

More news to come...

Tinnitus

Hello friends. Apologies all-round for not posting anything here for a few months. We've been having some trouble with our ears lately. That is to say, I've been having some trouble with my ears: hearing-loss and tinnitus trouble. My ears have been ringing (and not hearing so well) for a while. Earlier this year something came along and seriously exacerbated that situation. What it was, I'm not even sure, though I'm fairly certain it was loud-noise related.

Anyway, as a result, we will be playing far fewer shows (almost none). An occasional date at our beloved Springwater or The Nursing Home (our place) may surface now and again, but for the most part we will refocus our efforts almost entirely on recording. Thank you to anyone / everyone who ever showed an interest in this project. We very much appreciated the support.

Sincerely,
Jeb

Offbeat Artist Of The Month: J.R. FISHER

Welcome to the second installment of Grandpa Egg's "Offbeat Artist Of The Month" series. Each month we'll spotlight an artist or band that's perhaps a bit strange and unusual (musically or otherwise). This month's featured artist is folk-blues troubadour J.R. FISHER.

This was a sentiment reserved for alcoholics as they follow their hearts again into the night, I thought. This guy hurling his voice out into the crowd. His music filling-up like booze in my brain, which swelled with pleasure and gave birth to an overwhelming sense of freedom...

J.R. Fisher is a singer/songwriter from Columbus, OH, whose music carries with it a spirit of rock 'n' roll rebelliousness and drunken vulnerability. His combining of killer guitar work, catchy tunes tinged with the blues, and howling vocals, make for a compelling sound; one that can inspire even the most hardened barfly to swivel round on his or her stool and take notice.

Lyrically, he loves to play devil's advocate to any number of sensitive issues: from religion and murder, to alcohol abuse and his own sense of self-loathing. Often using Jesus as a reference point (or perhaps muse), he bridges a gap between spiteful social-abandon and intense openness, and does-so with wit, humor and a wry sort of enjoyment.

Honest and disarming, whether he's banging out the songs on his acoustic-guitar, or tearing through them with his electric and three-piece band, he rules: whiskey-soaked, to-the-bone, heart on his sleeve, shambling and street-lights, "Jim 'fucking' Morrison," the abyss of the barroom and beyond. Thank you J.R. FISHER.

Sample lyric:

Made a deal with the devil
And what the deal was can't recall
Couldn't sleep, sold my soul away
Sonuvabitch left me with nothing at all
And now i'm chasing this dark brown eyed japanese queen
Only time she loves me is in my dreams

Website: jrfisher.bandcamp.com
Most-recent release: J.R. Fisher (2011)
Upcoming show: February 11th @ The FooBAR (Nashville, TN)

Did you know? - J.R. Fisher played formerly in the acoustic-duo JAMES & JAMES.

Offbeat Artist Of The Month: LYLAS

Welcome to the first installment of Grandpa Egg's "Offbeat Artist Of The Month" series. Each month we'll try to spotlight an artist or band that's perhaps a bit strange and unusual (musically or otherwise). This month's featured artist is Nashville based "funeral-folk" act LYLAS.

The record starts, right away that crackle, then curling up and all through the room like smoke or some hypnotic radio broadcast from the 30's, the eerie and often enchanting sounds of Lylas...

Lylas is fronted by singer/songwriter Kyle Hamlett, who has a wonderful ear for dark harmonic elements and a sort-of playful Edgar Allen Poe-like lyricism. He creates gently moving old-timey folk-tunes with haunting melodies and bizarre chord-progressions (and chords), while finger-picking away at his banjo. Kyle is accompanied variously (live and on record) by an assortment of players, including: KelliShay on fiddle, Josh on bass, Ryan on organ and guitar, Luke on pedal-steel, Rollum on drums, and Joseph on accordion. All are amazing in their respective treatment and sensitivity to the music.

I love this band. All the elements blend together perfectly and there's a real identity and uniqueness of sound, vibe, and effect. It makes me think: skeleton in a top-hat, soft-jangle and incantations by candlelight... pleasantly deranged and sincerely delivered. Thank you Lylas.

Sample lyric:

Rain drops rose up and froze around your head
Between we weave and sway like drunk undead
Quiet quiet your sister's hair went white
Devils on her tongue and thorn's around her thighs

Website: www.lylas.net
Most-recent release: Snow Day (2011)
Upcoming show: [none]

Did you know? - Kyle and KelliShay also perform in a similarly spooky folk-duo called STYCHES.

Murfreesboro Pulse review

The Murfreesboro Pulse has reviewed our album SONGS FOR MY CAT. Here is a sample:

The Cat person in all of us needs to have a seat because Nashville psychedelic-folk trio Grandpa Egg has put together its first full-length record mostly dedicated to the life, thoughts, and every day whims of their now immortalized tabby named Mokey.

The "unceremoniously self-released" Songs For My Cat came out this past August as Jeb and Bart Morris's playful idea turned toy piano-driven homage that's capable of unleashing the primal urge in listeners to dangle a string over some cat's head be it during a nice family dinner, alone in the comfort of the living room or even driving down the road. Songs For My Cat impressively sets that mood regardless of location or access to cats.
